International Community Service Program at Buku Jalanan Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Sociology Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN), has once again expanded the reach of its International Community Service (PKM) program by engaging with marginalized communities in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The activity focused on an educational collaboration with Buku Jalanan Chow Kit (BJCK), a local non-governmental organization dedicated to providing educational access and a safe space for disadvantaged, marginalized, and undocumented children in urban Kuala Lumpur.
Using a community sociology and inclusive education approach, the FKIP UNTAN Sociology Education International PKM team conducted learning assistance, social literacy, and character education activities. The presence of Sociology Education academics in this non-formal learning space was intended to examine the social realities and challenges faced by children in densely populated urban environments while strengthening their motivation, social resilience, and self-confidence. The interactive activities also served as a cross-cultural learning medium that promoted empathy, equal access to education, and human solidarity regardless of social status.
For the FKIP UNTAN Sociology Education Study Program, the collaboration with Buku Jalanan Chow Kit is not only an expression of cross-border social concern, but also a rich field for sociological study of urban poverty, migration, and access to education. The activity reinforces the university's commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Quality Education (SDG 4) and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10). Through this International Community Service initiative, sustainable cooperation between academics and grassroots communities is expected to continue in creating educational solutions for vulnerable children in the era of globalization.
